I nag. If I think some extra work is needed to achieve higher quality, I will nag until we get there, and I need a team around me that has the same goal. People willing to motivate themselves and their colleagues to do better. Discussions spur development.
Because of my role, I'm often the only one at the table who considers and advocates for the user's needs. I know the product has to be profitable, but I don't agree with customers just because they pay me. Because they don't pay me as a yes-man, they pay me as a consultant. I believe that what's best for my client's users is what's best for my client.
... is one of the most important qualities we humans have. In the end, everything we create comes from curiosity and creativity to create something better, easier, more enjoyable and/or more beautiful. Big Data, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence seem to be taking over every space and many are sure they will replace creation as well. I don't think so. Every tool we build depends first on the creativity of a human being. It also allows us to break out of the conversion optimization loop that many companies are trapped in until someone disrupts their industry. What's a 4% higher click-through rate worth if someone runs off with a new idea? Nothing.
The most important driver of excellent products is the team behind them. We idolize Steve Jobs and Elon Musk for their product visions, but they are nothing without exceptional people who challenged them and made the shared visions happen.
I only work in teams that have common goals but different backgrounds and skill sets to take their work to the next level. You can't do it without developers, quality managers, UI designers, UX writers, and researchers.
Communication is key. Not just with my colleagues, but with customers and users. Even for a species that learned complex language thousands of years ago, it still seems difficult today. I am no exception. For me, transparency and clarity are extremely important. Only if we talk to each other honestly and at eye level can we bring our work to a result that everyone can be proud of. I, too, still have a lot to learn here and am always grateful for feedback.
This Jung von Matt mantra connects me most with my past employer. It sums up my aspirations and my work. It doesn't mean I'm negative and depressed or pessimistic. I learn from past projects and always try to make the next one even better.
